Introduction

Las Vegas is the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, it is all about entertainment, offered in the form of theater shows, casinos and a great variety of shops. The city is full of neon signs, which makes Las Vegas is the most brightly lit city on earth which can be seen from outer space.

Population

About half a million people live in the city, however this number is much greater when you include the suburban area, well over 2 million.

Location

Las Vegas is located in the north of the American state of Nevada, adjacent to California. The city is situated in a very dry, desert-like area surrounded by mountains. The Springs Mountains, with Charleston Peak (3,633 m) being the highest top, are located to the west of Las Vegas.

Economy

The economy of Las Vegas is all about tourism, additionally, many congresses are organized in the city, attracted by the option of entertainment outside the meetings. Though tourism is not the only important sector, in recent years many technology companies have settled in the city. It should, however, be noted that some of these companies specialise in gambling games.

Airports

The McCarran International Airport is located eight kilometers to the south of the city. This airport mainly has connections to cities within Northern America but there are also some intercontinental flights.

Public transport

Citizens Area Transit operates several bus lines, of which most run to the suburbs. The double decker bus ‘The Deuce’ is an exception, it runs 24 hours a day along ‘The Strip’, the part of Las Vegas Boulevard where most hotels, casinos and theaters are located. Alongside The Strip also runs a monorail with seven stops, this monorail does not operate between 02.00 a.m. and 07.00 a.m.

Traffic and parking

America is the country of convenience for car owners and Las Vegas is no exception to this. You can perfectly drive around in the city, except for The Strip, especially during weekends. People who know their way around in the city therefore take a special route, they take the I-15 highway (which runs parallel with The Strip) and take the turning closest to the destined casino or hotel.

Parking is no problem at all and is mostly free for hotel guests or casino visitors. On weekends the parking garages get full fast but there is a solution to this, have your car parked (so-called ‘valet parking’).

Hotels

There is a large variety of hotels/casinos to offer (a common combination in Las Vegas), but take into account that on weekends they are often fully booked, the rates are also significantly higher then. If you wish to avoid the hustle, then book a hotel between Sunday and Thursday. You don't only pay a lot less, but you can also enjoy special offers, such as a room including dinner and theater show.

Be aware that the hotels in Las Vegas mostly charge for the use of internet and the fitness facilities, of which the rates are usually quite high.
